The J/22 Mid-Atlantic Championship was held the weekend of October 28. The event was again held in coordination with the J/24 East Coast Championship and hosted by Severn Sailing Association and J/22 Fleet 19. The weekend turned into a formidable competition with a total of 24 J/22s competing. The party Saturday night paralleled the competition in intensity with great food, live music and lots of dancing. It was fortunate to have great weather for the event, with 17-18 knots of breeze Saturday from the south with steep waves, which made for a day of hard work and tactical acumen. Sunday brought 6-15 knots from the east and steadily building as it shifted south. A total of seven races were held with four on Saturday and three on Sunday. Throughout the weekend, racing was tight amongst the top five boats, with lead changes nearly every race between Mike Marshal, Jeff Todd, J.R Maxwell, Chris Junge and Brad Julian. Boat speed, handling through the waves and changing gears was paramount. Going into the last race of the regatta, only one point separated the first place boat. Brad Julian rounded the top mark in fourth or fif5th place and held his boat’s position by the leeward rounding. Julian and his team were able to get ahead of Mike Marshall on the last beat with a right hand shift and round the last top mark in second. They got the jump on an inside jibe and were able to pass J.R. Maxwell on the final run to put enough points between their boat, Marshall’s boat and Jeff Todd’s boat to solidify their win. Brad Julian’s boat included Colin Robertson on bow, who was focused on strategy, and Matt Schubert calling tactics and trimming middle.
