Glenn Darden’s Baby Doll leads the 46-boat fleet after a strong opening day at the 2026 J/22 World Championship sponsored by Allstate Sugar Bowl, winning all three races to take an early eight-point lead. Hosted by Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Championship brings together sailors from 16 U.S. states along with teams from the Cayman Islands and the Netherlands. With sunshine, warm temperatures and a steady breeze to start the day, the fleet completed three races on Lake Pontchartrain.

Winds began at 12–15 knots and settled into the 10–12-knot range before fading mid-afternoon. Lumpy seas added a challenge to an otherwise spectacular day on the water. Darden, of Fort Worth Boat Club, won each race, establishing a commanding position at the top of the leaderboard with just three points. Jeff Hayden’s Polar Express of Severn Sailing Association sits second overall with 11 points after scores of 5-3-3. Jacob Doyle’s Piñata from Annapolis Yacht Club is third with 17 points, posting 7-4-6.

In Race 1, Darden took the win ahead of Jay Miles’ Honeybadger and Mike Gemperline’s Defiance. Hayden then finished second in Race 2, behind Darden and ahead of Marvin Beckmann’s The Martian. In Race 3, Darden again prevailed, with Jean-Michel Lautier’s Fraporita second and Hayden third.

While the racing is serious, the atmosphere ashore at Southern Yacht Club has been anything but intimidating. The Worlds has brought together a remarkable community of sailors, including many past World Champions, along with numerous father-and-son and husband-and-wife crews. The friendly atmosphere at Southern Yacht Club, combined with classic New Orleans hospitality, has created a strong family feel.

Everyone has been keeping a close eye on the weather, with Hurricane Isaias forming in the Gulf. Race Committee and event organizers have decided to conclude the Championship early on Thursday, with three to four more races planned. The 2026 J/22 World Champion will be crowned Thursday.
