Seventeen teams competed in the Chubb US Youth Sears Cup Championship, held August 6-8 in San Diego, CA. With racing in J/22s, light winds of 5 to 8 knots dominated the event won by Wayzata Yacht Club (Wayzata, MN) with the team of Dominik Moncur, Stonewall Anderson, Harper Lundeen-Hetland and Ella Bowers. A total of 14 races were held for the 17 teams from around the USA. During the Qualifying Round, teams rotated through host San Diego Yacht Club’s fleet of 12 J/22s in a round-robin format. The final day of the Championship had the top nine teams racing in the Gold Fleet vying for the Sears Cup, and the bottom eight teams racing in the Silver Fleet. “The Sears Cup has been a wonderful experience for our team, and we are so thankful to everyone who made it possible for us to be here and to San Diego Yacht Club for hosting a great regatta,” said Wayzata’s Stonewall Anderson. “We learned throughout the event and got better every race.” Just three points back to take the silver medal were Austin Yacht Club’s James Brock, with crew of Ryder Getson, Lily Wind and Laura Covington. Rounding out the podium was the St. Francis Yacht Club comprised of Caleb Everett, Henry. Scalise, Oscar Perry and Marina Priskich. The balance of the top five included Maxwell Connor’s Noroton Yacht Club team in fourth and Ryan Downey’s San Diego Yacht Club team in fifth place. Special recognition was given to the team from East Greenwich Yacht Club for winning the Shipshape Perpetual Award, awarded annually to the team who demonstrates the utmost care and attention to detail for their borrowed boat during and after the Championship. Additionally, the F. Gardner Cox Sportsmanship Award was awarded to the team from Willamette Sailing Club for exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship and responsibility on and off the water.
